On Saturday noon, images of money floating in a drain in front of the Railway Officers’ Mess building in Rajshahi’s Shiroil started to go viral on social media.
Being informed, police have started to look into the matter but the question regarding the owners of the money still remains unanswered.
Meanwhile, Rajshahi Road Transport Group said they put stacks of some 10-year-old paper beside the drain on Saturday noon. Some of the papers fell in the drain from there. There might have been some money in those papers.
“The papers were old and already started to decay. Since we couldn’t burn them anymore, we decided to throw them into the drain,” General Secretary of Rajshahi Road Transport Group Matiul Huq Tito told The Business Standard. He visited the spot after hearing about floating money.
“We didn’t realise that there might be some money left inside those old papers. But the amount shouldn’t be more than Tk2,000-3,000. But we heard that people found more than Tk100,000 there. This is embarrassing,” he added.
Officer-in-Charge of Boalia Model Police Station also visited the spot on Saturday noon.
“I saw people looking for banknotes in the drain. I talked to the locals and they told me that there were at least a few lakh worth of banknotes there,” he said.
“We still don’t know who’s the owner of the money. It’s not clear if the money came from the old papers of Road Transport Group. So, we’ve filed a general diary and continuing the investigation,” he added.
Meanwhile, eyewitnesses said the news of money floating in a drain suddenly spread throughout the city and hundreds gathered in front of Railway Officers’ Mess building to see it with their own eyes.
Some even took it a step further and jumped into the drain to get some free bucks.
One of the eyewitnesses said there were banknotes of Tk1000, 500, 100, 20, 10 and 5 floating on the water.
Aslam, one of the locals, said he found a Tk1,000 banknote and another Tk500 banknote in the drain.
Another local Tulu also admitted to founding some banknotes, but didn’t disclose the amount.
