BSS, Gaibandha :
Vast tracts of char land of four upazilas in the district have been brought under late variety Nazirshail paddy cultivation this year expecting bumper production against the high value crop.
Office sources said Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) set a target to cultivate T-Aman paddy on a total of 1, 21, 259 hectares of land in the district this year with the production target of 3,13,475 tonnes of rice.
Later, the target fixed by the department was exceeded bringing more 6,751 hectares of land under the cultivation due to favorable climatic condition during the current season
In addition to the cultivation of different varieties of Aman paddy, Nazirshail, an indigenous variety, has been cultivated on thousands hectares of land lying on the riverbed of Teesta and Brahmaputra rivers flowing through the district.
The paddy has grown well and has already started ripening. The farmers of the chars and river basins are expecting desired and bumper production of output against the crop.
Farmer Hossain Ali of Char Charitabari under Sundarganj upazila in the district said just after removal of the flood water from the river bed, they have planted the seed of late variety Nazirshail paddy on the fallow char land.
As the production cost of the variety was very cheaper than other normal aman varieties, the char dwellers and river basin people cultivated the variety on thousands hectares of char land, he also said.
Another farmer of Fakirer char of the same upazila said the char land became very fertile due to depositing of silt and there was a little expense for organic fertilizer and insecticides to farm the variety.
Timely seed sowing and favorable climatic condition are the main reasons for expecting the bumper production of the variety, said Mozaharul Islam, chairman of Horipur union of Sundarganj upazila.
Satyen Sen, Sundarganj upazila agriculture officer said, as the rice of the Nazirshail paddy is very tasty to eat and its price is higher than other Aman varieties, the farmers chose it to farm with keen interest.
Deputy Director of DAE Mir Abdur Razzak said the farmers of chars and river basins were advised through field level agri officials to farm Nazirshail paddy on the fallow char land to help the growers earn economical benefit and achieve country’s food security as well.
