Hill-pocket dwellers urged to shift from hillside

Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Chittagong Mohammad Zillur Rahman Chowdhury called upon the hill side people to shift from their hill side residence immediately.
He said the monsoon rain is continuing for four consecutive days. There is high risk of landslide in Chittagong. “Therefore, all who are living in high risk at hill side areas should shift immediately.”
Sources said, more than one lakh people are living at hill sides in Chittagong in high risk of lives due to landslide. Despite the measures of Chittagong District Administration, Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) and Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) to shift the people from hill side in the city in the current rainy season, the hill side dwellers returned to the area after stopping rains.
Chittagong district administration is on high alert for landslide in Chittagong as the raining is continuing in recent days due to rough weather.
The massive landslides may occur again at the hills of Chittagong any time during the raining.
 DC of Chittagong Mohammed Zillur Rahman Chowdhury visited the hilly and hill side areas in the city for several times. Many people are living on the hills at illegal houses as well as many are at hill side areas illegally. Zillur Rahman Chowdhury requested the people to leave the areas as landslide may occurred due to the heavy rain in the current season.
Probe body identifying causes of landslides : The probe committee formed by the Commissioner of Chittagong Division in the backdrop of massive landslides in Chittagong and three hill districts has already started working on identifying the causes of recent landslides and framing recommendations for chalking out what to be done in the days to come.
The 27-member committee held its first meeting at Chittagong Divisional Commissioner’s Office chaired by Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief Satyabrata Saha Tuesday morning.
The committee members after the meeting visited the land slide-ravaged areas in Rangamati and they are scheduled to inspect land slide-hit areas in Bandarban on Wednesday.
Satyabrata Saha told the meeting that the committee would visit different areas and talk to the victims in order to identify the causes of landslide and prepare a set of recommendations in this regard. “We would also consider the 36 recommendations framed by the probe committee following the death of more than 100 people in a series of landslide in Chittagong on June 11, 2007”, he said adding that the recommendations would soon be handed over to the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Prof Dr Mohammad Shahidul Islam of Geogr-aphy and Environmental Sciences at Dhaka University and Prof Abdul Hoque of Geography and Environmental Studies at Chittagong University presented the basic causes of landslide on the basis of their research experiences.
Conducted by Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief Dr Ardhendu Shekhor Roy, the meeting was addressed, among others, by Additional Divisional Comm-issioner (Development), Chitta-gong Syed Sarwar Jahan and Deputy Commissioner of Chitta-gong Mohammad Zillur Rahman Chowdhury.
