Heavy rainfalls triggered by monsoon have inundated many parts of the capital on Friday, causing sufferings to the city dwellers.
The situation turned worse in capital’s different areas, mainly Maniknagar, Malibagh and Rokeya Sharani where road renovation works and different development projects, including the Metro Rail one, are underway.
Low-lying areas in Mugda, Sabujbagh, Rampura, Banani-11, Mirpur-10, Shewrapara, Kazipara, Mirpur-13, Nayapaltan, Green Road, Kazi Nazrul Islam Avenue, Tejtoribazar, Karwan Bazar, Monipuri Para, Tejgaon, Mohammadpur, Dhanmondi and Motijheel were submerged due to the heavy rain.
Lack of public transport and heavy gridlock in major roads due to inundation in various areas, made it extremely difficult for the city dwellers to commute. Motor vehicles were seen stuck in water with their engines drowned in knee-deep water.
Many people were seen wading through the water to reach their destinations.
According to Met office, the rain began around 12:30pm on Friday and continued throughout the day.
It caused water logging in many areas, causing sufferings to the city dwellers. The Met office recorded 48mm of rainfall between 12pm and 2pm in Dhaka.
The water entered many low-lying homes and business establishments, leaving people stranded.
The rainwater submerged many roads and lanes in different areas of the capital, where digging roads during monsoon is a common scenario.
Many people were seen wading through filthy water to reach their destinations.
Besides, knee-deep water was seen on Mouchak-Moghbazar flyover due to absence of any system to drain out rainwater.
Low-income groups of people, especially the day labourers, suffered much as rain disrupted their normal pace of life. Most of them had to stay indoors due to the squally weather.
Shams Mohammad Fazle Rabbi alias Bobi told The New Nation on Friday, “I never seen such a heavy rainfall in the city only in three hours duration.”
Tarekuzzam, devotee of Maniknagar Jam-e-masque said that water entered the ground floor of the mosque.
Rahim Mollah, a vegetable trader in the city’s Jatrabari, said that his maximum goods washed away as water entered the whole area within two hours.
According to the Met office, the axis of monsoon trough runs through Rajasthan, Horiyana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal to Assam across northern part of Bangladesh.
One of its associated trough extends up to North Bay. Monsoon is active over Bangladesh and moderate over North Bay.
Light to moderate rains, thunder showers accompanied by temporary gusty wind are likely to occur at most places over Dhaka, Mymensingh, Rajshahi, Rangpur, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions with moderately heavy to very heavy falls at places over the country.
