HC grants bail to 3 prisoners without trial

The High Court (HC) on Sunday granted bail to three prisoners who were incarcerated in jail for more than 14 to 18 years without any trial.
The High Court also directed the concerned trial courts to settle their cases within 90 days.
The prisoners were Makbul Hossain, Sentu Kamal and Billal Hossain.
In addition, the HC also ordered to finalize a case within 60 days filed against Chand Mia, another prisoner who was incarcerated in jail for more than 17 years without any trial.
The HC bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice J B M Hassan passed the order after hearing from these four prisoners.
Recently, news has been published about them in various media, including The New Nation. Following these reports the HC ordered the concerned jail authorities to produce them in court. The Kashimpur jail authorities produced them in the HC yesterday in comply with that order.
According to published reports, ‘Chand Mia is in prison since 1999 in a murder case of Shyampur Police Station. This case is now under trial in a Dhaka court. Mokbul Hossain of Madaripur was arrested in another murder case
HC for not complying with the court’s order that had asked the EC to dispose of a complaint about anomalies in the elections to Char-bhairabi Union Parishad in Chandpur’s Haimchar Upazila.
The Court accepted their apology on Sunday.
Md Jahidul Islam, an aggrieved chairman candidate of the recently held union parishad (UP) polls from Char-bhairabi Union Parishad in Chandpur’s Haimchar Upazila, filed a petition with the Election Commission seeking re-election in his UP.
The same month he filed a petition with the HC, as the EC did not dispose of his complaint. The HC on June 16 ordered the EC to dispose Jahidul’s petition within 30 days. But the EC didn’t act as per HC’s order.
Then Jahidul filed a petition with the HC against Chief Election Commissioner, four Commissioners and a Senior Assistant Secretary on charge of contempt of court. After hearing the petition the HC issued a rule against them.
On November 26, these six came to the HC registrar office and sworn an affidavit offering the unconditional apology to the HC for not complying with the court’s order. The court accepted their apology and exempted them.
