Hatirjheel was considered as a “great gift” for the dwellers of the capital city. It turned as one of the important entertainment centres after instantly it was opened. But negligence, lack of coordination and planning have turned it into a nightmare.

The aesthetic beauty and wide-open space of the entertainment project are gradually losing their charm due to odour seeping out from the contamenated lake.

Now-a-days the water of Hatirjheel is constantly spreading stench. Rotten garbage from different areas of the city in the lake has already destroyed water clarity. As the water is stuck in the lake for a long time the colour of water has already become black. This water now spreading lurid stink.

When traveling the Hatirjheel, it was seen that rampant of garbage are spread around this entertainment centre. Though modern instruments was placed to clean dirty water, those are not serving perfectly. This is why the amount of waste water is increasing day by day.

There is a load of rubbish along the lake shore. However, plastic trash cans at the lake side of the road are full with dirts, there is no exertion to clean them. In many places, human excreta was found lying.

Local resident Hanif Ahmed, also a manager of a private company, said that water of the surrounding areas falls into the lake through drain. Garbage moves with rain water. After rotting this garbage now spreading stench. It is stenching like city’s Hazaribagh tannery, he said.

A visitor, Aminur Rahman, said that the lake stenching for long days. But there is nobody to see this problem. People will stop coming here if this problem is not solved.

One of the project directors of Hatirjheel engineer Jamal Akter Bhuyan told The New Nation yesterday that there are 13 big drains to move rain water to the lake. But the drains of Panthapat, Kathalbagan and Raza Bazar areas of the city have been bathed by both water path and swerage line. This bathed water is drinaging to the lake and it making stench. It happens in the rainy season while there is no stenching in dry season.

He said, we are taking some steps to solve this problem. We are thinking to establish separate lines for water and sewerage drainaging. Already we received a draft of the plan from BUET in thius regard.
