Court Correspondent :
The Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court of Dhaka yesterday rejected bail plea of Abul Hasnat Reza Karim, a suspect in the Gulshan café attack.
Judge Kamrul Hossain Molla rejected the prayer although Hasnat’s Lawyer Abdul Mannan Khan told the court that the case details of the attack on the Holey Artisan Bakery did not mention Hasnat’s name.
“None of the witnesses mentioned Karim’s name in their depositions. Mobile call lists did not have any proof of his involvement. He resigned from the North
South University long ago, the defence lawyer added.
Hasnat, who once taught at the private university, was present in the Holey Artisan Bakery when it was stormed by gunmen, who left 20 dead on July 1 last year. However, Nibras Islam, one of the five gunmen studied at the North South University.
Hasnat was not produced in the court during the hearing on his bail plea. His lawyer said, “Hasnat has been suffering from diabetes, heart disease, kidney complications and high blood pressure. He is a peace loving man.”
But, Nazim Uddin, Assistant Commissioner of Police Prosecution Division, said in his responses, “Hasnat could be named in the charge-sheet. Given his age, it is unlikely that he suffers from so many diseases.”
