Habitat protection stressed to conserve biodiversity

Experts urged to protect the habitats of animals to conserve the biodiversity otherwise many species of Bangladesh, particularly in haor basins, will go extinct in future.
They also asked the authorities to make concerted policies conserve biodiversity in the country. They were speaking this in a workshop jointly organized by International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and faculty of Fisheries of Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) on Monday. The workshop was aimed to disseminate the findings and the process of the ongoing ‘Updating Species Red List of Bangladesh’ project, run by IUCN Bangladesh.
Prof. Dr. Md. Ali Akbar, Vice Chancellor, Bangladesh Agricultural University spoke on the occasion as chief guest while IUCN Country Representative in Bangladesh Mr. Ishtiaq Uddin Ahmad spoke as Special Guest. Among others Mr. Md. Akbar Hossain, Project Director, SRCWP, Bangladesh Forest Department and Mr. Mohammad Shahad Mahabub Chowdhury, Project Manager, Updating Species Red List of Bangladesh, IUCN Bangladesh presented a key note paper at the workshop. Prof. Dr. Subhash Chandra Chakraborty, Dean of Faculty of Fisheries of BAU Chaired the inaugural session.
BAU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Md. Ali Akbar in his speech said that everyone should get involved to conserve the biodiversity.
Mr Ishtiaq Uddin Ahmad expressed that loss of habitat due to human intervention could create havoc on ecological food chains and impact on human food security, public health and safety. Eight scientific papers were presented in two technical sessions.
In the programme speakers also informed that the knowledge of biodiversity is a critical factor to develop proper conservation strategies.
