Sector commanders’ Forum on Saturday urged the government to identify the war criminals who were in disguise and try them.
“They should be identified, one by one, and tried,” chairman of the Sector Commanders’ Forum, Major General K M Shafiullah, Bir Uttam, told a convention of freedom fighters, here.
This was the fourth national convention of the Forum, which is being held at Dhaka University’s Teachers-Students Center (TSC). Apart from Shafiullah, others who spoke at the meeting included Lt-Col Abu Osman Chowdhury, also the vice president of the forum, chairman of the Bangladesh Law Commission, Justice A B M Khairul Haq, pro-vice-chancellor of Dhaka University, Dr Nasreen Ahmed, eminent Islamic scholar and president, Ikra, Moulana Fariduddin Maswud and on behalf of the Collaborators-Killers Elimination Committee, Dr Nujhat Chowdhury.
Justice Haq said that all war criminals should be tried. There was no alternative to it. He also stressed on the need to preserve the spot where the Pakistan army surrendered on December 16, 1971.
Col. Osman called for strong action against those who were distorting the history of the Liberation War.
Prof Nasreen Ahmed called upon all to remain united under the leadership of Sheikh Hasina to materialize the program against the war criminals. She also asked for a list of Razakars. “That way the real freedom fighters could be identified,” she said. She also asked for uprooting the political base of Jamaat to protect future generations from these obscurantists.
Journalist Haroon Habib, secretary-general of the Forum and former chief editor of Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) said that all graves of war criminals should be unmarked as is the case elsewhere.
