Global Covid death toll tops 4.7 million

The global Covid death toll has now surpassed 4.7 million as the race for mass vaccination continues.

The total caseload and fatalities from the virus stand at 234,239,476 and 4,790,858, respectively, as of Saturday morning, according to Johns Hopkins University (JHU).

 So far, 6,261,231,161 Covid vaccine doses have been administered across the globe, as per the university data.

The United States reached its latest heartbreaking pandemic milestone Friday, eclipsing 700,000 deaths from Covid-19 just as the surge from the Delta variant is starting to slow down and give overwhelmed hospitals some relief.

 It took three and a half months for the US. to go from 600,000 to 700,000 deaths, driven by the variant’s rampant spread through unvaccinated Americans. The death toll is larger than the population of Boston, reports AP.

The US has logged 43,617,650 cases and 700,258 deaths to date, according to the university data. The death toll in the United States is the highest in the world.

India’s Covid-19 tally on Friday rose to 33,766,707 as 26,727 new confirmed cases were registered in the past 24 hours nationwide, as per the federal health ministry data.
