Police recovered the body of a woman, one was hospitalized and five others of a family went missing after a boat capsized in the Buriganga River last night.
The deceased was identified as Jamshida, 20, wife of one Delwar who lost his two legs.
Earlier, at least six members of a family, including three children and two women, went missing when a boat sank near Sadarghat terminal in the Buriganga River after being hit by a launch on Thursday night.
The missing persons are Shahida Begum, 28, wife of one Shahjalal, who swam ashore after the incident, her two daughters named eight years old Meem, and six years old Mahi, three months old toddler and Jamshida’s husband Delwar, 35.
Ershad Sikder, Duty Officer of Fire Service Control Office, told media that the accident occurred around 10 pm when a Barishal-bound launch, ‘MV Suravi-7’ rammed the boat carrying the family sailing towards Bhojeshwar of Shariatpur from Kamrangirchar of the city. Being informed, divers of Fire Service and Civil Defence rushed to the spot and were trying to rescue the victims, he added.
Abdur Razzak, Officer in-Charge (OC) of Sadargat River Police confirmed the matter to media that one of the seven passengers managed to swim ashore instantly; a woman body was recovered, while five others are still missing in the incident.
Our efforts are on to rescue others, OC added.
