A superb five-wicket haul by Mashrafe Bin Mortaza powered Gemcon Khulna to storm into the final of the Bangabandhu T20 Cup Cricket defeating Gazi Group Chattogram by 47 runs in their first Qualifier match at the flood-lit Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in the city’s Mirpur on Monday.
Mashrafe finished his
spell as 4-0-35-5. He was adjudged the Man of the Match.
Put into bat first, Gemcon Khulna piled up a mammoth total of 210 for the loss of seven wickets in the stipulated 20 overs and then bundled out Chattogram for 163 off 19.4 overs.
Gemcon Khulna made a formidable start as the openers Jahurul Islam and Zakir Hasan put up together 71 runs in the opening stand before Zakir Hasan (16) was run out by a joint-effort of Mahmudul Hasan Joy and wicketkeeper Liton Das.
After Zakir’s dismissal, Jahurul Islam and Imrul Kayes contributed together 48 runs for the second wicket partnership before Imrul (25) was caught by Mahmudul Hasan Joy off Mustafizur Rahman when Khulna’s total was 119 for the loss of two wickets.
After Imrul’s departure, Jahurul Islam was caught by Shykat Ali off Mosaddek Hossain when Khulna’s score was 132 for the loss of three wickets.
Jahurul Islam hammered a hurricane 80. His 51-ball innings was decorated with four sixes and five fours.
After Jahurul’s dismissal, Shakib Al Hasan and Mahmudullah Riyad contributed together 31 runs in the fourth wicket stand before Mahmudullah Riyad was caught by Soumya Sarkar off Sanjit Saha when Khulna’s total was 163 for the loss of four wickets.
Mahmudullah hit a quick-fire 30. He hit three sixes and two fours in his nine-ball knock.
After Mahmudullah’s departure, Shakib Al Hasan and Ariful Haque added together 31 runs for the five-wicket partnership before Ariful Haque (15) was run out by Mustafizur Rahman when Khulna’s score was 194 for the loss of five wickets.
Then Shakib Al Hasan was bowled out by Mustafizur Rahman when Khulna’s total was 202 for the loss of six wickets.
Shakib Al Hasan made 28 from 15 balls featuring two sixes and two fours.
Mustafizur Rahman bagged two wickets at the cost of 31 runs, while Mosaddek Hossain and Sanjit Saha took one wicket conceding 27 and 50 runs respectively.
Gazi Group Chattogram had a shaky start as they lost their early two wickets for 27 runs.
Experienced Mashrafe Bin Mortaza dismissed opener Soumya Sarkar for naught when Chattogram’s score was just 13.
Then Mashrafe Bin Mortaza picked up the wicket of opener Liton Das (24) when Chattogram’s total was 27.
After Liton’s departure, Mahmudul Hasan Joy and Mohammad Mithun mended the innings contributing together 73 runs for the third wicket partnership before Mahmudul Hasan was caught by Imrul Kayes off Mashrafe Bin Mortaza when Chattogram’s score was 100 for the loss of three wickets.
