There was no gas supply to Azimpur, Dhanmondi and Mipur areas in Dhaka for 24 hours, as a gas line was snapped in Ashulia, said Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Limited on Saturday.
The Titas authorities said, the gas outage started from 8:00 am on the day for emergency maintenance. Gas supply of Titas pipeline was suspended at Ashulia and Amin Bazar CNG stations.
As a result, gas crisis hit household, industries, all commercial establishment and captive power plants in these areas.
A mobile SMS from Titas said that parts of Ashulia, Savar, Aminbazar, Gabtali, Mirpur, Paikpara, Kalyanpur, Shyamoli, Ring Road, Mansurabad, Kadirabad, Mohammadpur, Lalmatia, Dhanmondi, Azimpur and Hazaribag might experience a gas outage or low gas pressure.
Titas supplies gas to nearly 2.8 million residents in Dhaka. It also sends gas to various industrial areas and factories.
Owing to lack of gas supply, people could not cook their meals at home and opted to buy lunch from biryani restaurants in Mohammadpur, of which the area is particularly famous for it.
But restaurants like Jannat Biriyani House, Shawkat Biriyani House and Hazi Biriyani and Nobabi Biriyani could not fulfil all their customers’ demands. The shopkeepers were seen asking customers to come back later as they were out of food by 2:00pm, our correspondent reports from the spot.
In Lalmatia’s Shad Tehari Ghar, around a hundred customers were seen pushing and jostling around to try and collect food ahead of others, local people said.
But the restaurant would not be able to comply with everyone’s demands as food was already running out by 3:00pm.
