Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan has said lack of fund is stopping the government from implementing the deep seaport project at Sonadia near Cox’s Bazar.
“Construction of the deep seaport is a mega project. It’s difficult for a single organisation or single country to arrange the huge fund needed for implementation of this sort of project, he said in Parliament on Thursday.
The minister was replying to a question by Bhola-3 MP Nurunnabi Chowdhury.
The government undertook a project to build the deep seaport at Sonadia in the Bay of Bengal. It earlier said several countries including China had expressed their willingness to finance the project.
Khan said four organisations from China, India, the Netherlands and United Arab Emirates submitted proposals for implementation of the projects under government-to-government arrangements.
A committee, formed last year with the principal secretary at the PMO as its chief, was scrutinising the proposals and will submit a report to the government, he said.
“We expect that we’ll receive the report shortly. The next steps for implementation of the project will be taken later,” the minister said.
The Cabinet committee on Economic Affairs approved the project on principle on Sept 11, 2012.
Pacific Consultant International of Japan in 2009 recommended construction of Bangladesh’s first deep seaport at Sonadia following survey at eight points.
The government also plans to construct another deep seaport at Paira in Patuakhali.
Mongla-Ghosiakhali route opens in July
To another question, Khan said dredging was going on in Mongla-Ghosiakhali channel to replace the Shela River channel.
He said the channel was opened on a trial basis on May 6 and would be inaugurated formally in July following completion of the remaining dredging works.
