Khagrachhari Hill District Council Chairman (KHDC) Chairman Kongjori Chowdhury said Awami League (AL) government signed the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) accord with leading ethnic forum Parbatya Chattogram Jana Samhati Samiti (PCJSS) to ensure peace and prosperity in the region and the accord will be fully implemented if AL is re-elected.
He said this at a meeting programme on KHDC premises to celebrate 21 years of CHT accord on Sunday morning.
He said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, also daughter of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, has done a huge development in CHT in the last ten years.
More than 90 per cent clauses have been implemented, and the rest will be done if AL goes to power again.
KHDC Chairman Kongjori Chowdhury also said the hill people are now enjoying peace due to huge development works at every sector in CHT.
Khagrachhari Army Region Commander Brigadier General Hamidul Haque said peace is prevailing in CHT due to this accord, and the government has good intention to continue it.
Among others, BGB Sector Commander Colonel Sazzadul Islam, Chief Executive of CHT Refugee Affairs Taskforce Krishna Chandra Chakma, and KHDC Chief Executive Mohammad Nuruzzaman were also present in the programme. Earlier, a colourful rally was brought out in the town from KHDC premises that paraded different roads and ended on Khagrachhari Town Hall premises. The slow implementation of the CHT accord that ended two decade-long insurgency, armed conflict and bloodshed in Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT), has frustrated hill people.
Press and Publication Secretary of United Peoples Democratic Front (UPDF) Niron Chakma said CHT accord is just a mockery with tribal people. Hill people are not getting anything that can create hope for them. President of PCJSS (MN-Larma fraction) Sudha Sindhu Khisa criticised the government for playing double standard policy regarding the implementation of CHT accord that was hailed nationally and internationally.
He blamed both AL and BNP governments for non-activation of Land Commission.
On the other hand, lawmaker and District AL President Kujendra Lal Tripura, Rangamati District AL President Dipankar Talukder and Bandarban lawmaker Bir Bahadur Ushoi Singh denied the allegations made by PCJSS leaders and pointed out that most of the sections of CHT accord have already been implemented.
