Friendship improves living standards of poor in Kurigram Char areas

A non-government organisation `Friendship’ helped the distressed people at the Char areas for developing their living standard recently in Kurigram. From the government development inception, the main goal is to establish a full standard of living with equal dignity by developing the standard of living of the disadvantaged people in the char and coastal areas along with the development of the government.
To this end, the organization has provided sheep, season-wise good quality vegetables seeds and insecticides trap among the distressed members of the Friendship Disaster Management Committee in 24 villages in Sadar, Chilmari and Rowmari Upazilas of Kurigram District through the Transitional Fund Project.
Through regularization of members’ income project is being implemented for economic development, wealth increase and good governance in the society such as- prevent child marriage, family abuse stopped, parliament and constitution, general diary and to increase the ability to deal with disaster situation. Members are being encouraged to cultivate by distributing good quality vegetable seeds to the poor in the char region.
Members have been enabled to meet their food needs and nutrition by cultivating vegetables in their homestead using organic manure in bed and pit vegetables.
Moreover, they are making financial profit by selling the extra vegetables in the market, which has created massive stir in the community. Seeing the high production with quality seed inspired others people of the community to cultivate vegetables.
Sheep has been provided to the members hoping to make more profit in a short time. Before distributing vegetable seeds and sheep, all the members have been trained in modern methods of vegetable cultivation by the Upazila Agriculture Officer (UAO) and Upazila Livestock Officer (ULO).
At the time of distributing sheep to the members Upazila Livestock Officer provided vaccine and deworming tablet and provide healthy sheep. Already sheep of many members produce lambs and some members became interested and bought more sheep on their own initiative. Sheep rearing has created an opportunity to benefit financially in a short time.
Ahila Begum a member of Sobujpara FDMC of Kurigram Sadar Upazila. She is widow. She received one sheep from Transition Fund Project (ASD) with an amount of 3600/-. Now she has four sheep with a market value of 15000/-and she sold two sheep with an amount of 5000/-. She also got widow allowance from union parishad.
She bought a cow with the amount of 35000/- After getting training she produced vegetables in her homestead area through modern method and in this year, she sold vegetable with an amount 4000/-. This amount helps her to bear family expenses. All the activities are under Transitional Fund Project and this project is implemented under the guidance of Team Leader, Climate Action, Md. Nayeem Khan, and Managed by Project Manager, Md. Ashraful Islam Mollick in collaboration with Project Officer, Senior Field Facilitator, Field Facilitator and under the supervision of Regional Coordinator of Friendship Kurigram region.
