Freedom fighters expected to be a dominant force for freedom

As a nation our people have been unlucky. Due to indifference of our educated ones all their sacrifices were betrayed by power thirsty political leadership. All our people’s struggle and blood shedding at the behest of political leaders wasted in the absence of free minded conscious intellectuals had failed to come together in protection of the national interest.
The few as exceptions can suffer torture, imprisonment or put their lives at risk. But they would not enough for stopping the mischief in collaboration with state forces.
There is something terribly wrong in our education that makes the educated ones selfish job seekers and obey. Generally speaking our educated people have not been able to unshackle themselves of the thinking that in a free country knowledge and foresight of the educated people are most important. Under a government of no knowledge, chaos, corruption and mismanagement are inevitable.
We say that we achieved independence at a cost of ocean of people’s blood. But within half an hour the nation was deprived of all the rights and the Constitution. The journalists, teachers, many other educated ones went in processions to welcome the change. This meant we lost all our political achievements when BAKSAL revolutionary government was instituted.
In last election the police were freely used “to declare yesterday’s election results today”: as jokes went.
To achieve independence means to achieve a government of the and for the people guarding their rights and interests. There will be debate and discord but as the people’s government it will be government of all of us. If the mental disposition is to obey the government right or wrong then no people will be free. The government will be our master unrestrained by rights of the people or its own illegitimacy.
A few political leaders and army generals were behind the massacre in East Pakistan and destroyed the united existence of Pakistan. The people as owners of the country were in daze and did not know even what had happened and what consequences to follow.
This kind of madness could not have happened in any civilised country where the educated people with their knowledge and foresight feel part of the country.
What I like to say and want to say is that our educated people must not allow any government to disown the people as owners of the country and become the master.
The country belongs to all of us. Saving public interest and freedom is not the responsibility of a few political leaders. It is absurd thinking for a free people.
This should be known to every educated ones that politicians as the people’s representatives are needed for right leadership but they are not trusted with the fate of the country. The government institutions are maintained for checks and balances in exercising power. There is something known as the citizens responsibility for a free people to remain free. This realisation is most in want.
Look at the role taken up by every section of the educated people against the use of arbitrary powers by President Trump of America and his many ways of obstructing the process of justice.
Trump’s own selected people for the government are fighting him at the cost of losing jobs for their higher obligation to the country. It is the educated section which is most vocal to say Trump is unfit to run the county and how damages were caused to national interest.
The thinking among the educated people must change not to accept cravenly that the country belongs to political leaders and not to the people.
The role of freedom fighters was to secure freedom for the people and they were supposed to dominate the internal politics for making freedom inalienable.
Bangladesh has become an easy country for anybody to rule. No election is necessary. Using corruption to buy loyalty is the game of politics.
After one of them was killed brutally by police the freedom fighters came out angry to demand justice. Surely, it was the right thing to do. The crossfire killing, torture and forced disappearances were going on from the birth of Bangladesh. The justice system is broken still we hope killers will be punished. But Major (retd) Sinha Md Rashed Khan will not be brought back to life or the system of easy killing will change.
I specially met Bangabandhu to explain that after nine month’s army massacre pro-Pakistani element do not exist for creating troubles. Bangladesh was peaceful and united a country.
It is my firm belief that adopted practice of secret killing was a wrong decision. The figures of how many lives were lost under which regime is not difficult to find.
I still believe that such a dangerous policy was uncalled for and its continuation helped the country gradually to become a country of criminals.
All our educated people have to be aware of their duty to the country if hard won independence is to be meaningful.
We are where we are, unsafe and insecure because knowledge and foresight of our educated people had no usefulness for the cause of the country.
