FOLLOWERS of Chattogram Lawmaker Mostafizur Rahman allegedly attacked a section of freedom fighters while they were forming a human chain in the Port city on August 24. Around 15 participants of the programme organised by Chattogram Mukti Joddha Command received minor injuries during the attack, said the Command’s Finance Secretary of Chattogram district (South) Abdur Razzak.
Razzak alleged that the attack was planned and carried out by the followers of Tazul Islam, assistant personal secretary of MP Mostafizur Rahman. The freedom fighters formed the human chain at Chattogram Press Club around 11:30 am demanding action against Mostafizur, lawmaker from Chattogram-16 constituency, for his derogatory comment about a renowned freedom fighter, our staff correspondent reports. The demonstrators also sought attention of the authorities to take action against MP Mostafizur, who dishonoured a freedom fighter over a rivalry depriving him of state honour.
Intra-party feuds of the ruling party are growing, not lessening nationwide. Intra-party clashes in the ruling Awami League (AL) and its associate organisations continue amid the ongoing coronavirus crisis, claiming lives of the party activists and leaving scores injured. The clashes between the ruling party factions mostly occurred over establishing of supremacy in their area. Difference of opinions about following directions of senior leaders and even distribution of relief materials during the coronavirus crisis stoked the feuds, according to reports received from different parts of the country.
According to data, there were 4,126 intra-party clashes in AL that killed 477 people and injured 43,881 others in the last 11 years since 2009 while there were 664 incidents of intra-party clashes in BNP that killed 35 people and injured 7,644. During these 11 years, data records show 33 intra-party clashes in other political parties that injured 364 people.
So we can clearly see the result of system where there exist no major opposition parties. If a credible opposition had been allowed to exist the death tolls in that party would have been high because both parties would have people contending for power. As it is the real power lies with only one party which is why over 90 per cent of the deaths and over 84 per cent of the injuries occurred to members of the ruling party. A transfer of power in a real election would have resulted in more even casualties in both sides.
This is sad that the freedom fighters lost their power and image for ceasing to be fighters for freedom. When the people have so easily lost all their freedoms there cannot be freedom fighters. The MP who obstructed became MP by depriving the people’s freedom to vote.
