There is no protection in highways. The transport regulatory authority or the highway police feel not concerned and accountable for killings in road accidents. Buses and trucks have become moving engine of killing. This cannot go on. Filing cases against bus drivers and owners have prove futile.
Reports said five people were killed and 30 others injured in a head-on collision between a truck and a bus at a place in Sujanagar upazila of Pabna district on Monday afternoon. The Dhaka-bound bus collided with the truck killing and injuring all those people on the spot and what appears to be quite unbelievable is that there is none to be accountable for the deaths.
The drivers are dead or absconding and the owners of the vehicles are keeping away for safety. They will appear at a later time to release their vehicles from local police station on a bond and may be on some bribe. The cases will cease to continue at certain time.
The fact is that Road Transport Workers Union is so strong that such killings on highways don’t fall to murder category but just accident and cases are dealt with accordingly. So people are dying in road accidents but others have been forced to accepting it as the ‘Will of God’ and it happens almost everyday. There is no justification of BRTC as regulatory body or the highway police for safety of the highways if the people have to lose lives in reckless accidents.
Two more people died again on the same day on Monday in Dhaka-Mawa highway at Keranigonj when a CNG-run auto rickshaw and an oil lorry collided head-on. The death stories are hefty on daily basis, not just
limited to two Eid vacations; but there is none to talk about damage to the injured and compensation to the dead.
Killing in road accidents by buses and trucks cannot be accepted as murders. The BRTC and highway police including their drivers and owners must be held accountable for murders. These bodies cannot be allowed to go unpunished to enjoy easy life when the people are killed helplessly.
It is our firm belief that to hold BRTC and police liable to be punished and compensate for the loss of lives in the highways. We want to see the safety situation must improve.
