Floods wash away standing crops in Dhunot UZ

Heavy flood water has started receding from the mighty Jamuna River in the eastern side of district from last week under Dhunot upazila in Bogra district.
 The hundreds of people are being got rid of miseries from the long flood water by dint of down stem across the three Dhunot, Shonatola and Shriakandi of the district. The famers of the area will bring the land under different crops within a week.
Flood affected of people said, water-borne diseases have started to spread with the receding of flood water in the area from last week across the upazila. Around 250 people had been attacked with diarrhoea, respiratory problems and conjunctivitis in the flood-affected areas within seven to ten days. Flood situation is likely to continue improving in low lands adjacent to the Bangalee and the Jamura rivers in Bogra in next 48 hours. Standing crops, including vegetable and jute, of thousands of hectares of land have been washed away by flood water under Dhunot, Shonatola and Shriakandi upazilas of the district due to current flood situation. The farmers are worried about the seed beds as they have to plant the crops as early as possible for supporting fodder of human being.
They do not have sufficient capital to cope up with the current situation after the deluge. The crops on 450 hectares of lands have been damaged by the river water. The authority concern said that without proper seeds they would not be able to cultivate the lands timely. The Agriculture Expansion Department office sources said they have prepared plants for cultivation of paddy. They can distribute the plants bringing from adjacent district. An agriculture officer from Dhunot said, we will take the decision after the flood water retreat further. We will distribute the local varieties initially again. The lands from where the water retreat, we will suggest the farmers to grow vegetables and other varieties of crops. The farmers fear that they would not get fair price of their product this year, officer added.
