The overall flood situation in the areas on the bank of Karotoa river in Polashbari and Gobindaganj upazila here has deteriorated further due to onrush of hilly water from upstream and continuous rainfall in last few days.
The officials of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) said the water level of the Karotoa river rose by 5 cm in last 24 hours ending at 9 on Friday morning.
The river is flowing 116 cm above its danger level at Katakhali Bridge point of Gobindaganj upazila, inundating the fresh areas of the upazilas.
The homesteads and the roads of the river basin areas have been submerged leaving at least twenty thousands of people marooned and creating untold sufferings to them.
Many people have taken shelter at higher places and academic institutions with belongings including domestic animals and poultry birds and were passing tough times.
T-Aman paddy, sugarcane and vegetables on hundreds hectares of land have been submerged making the farmers more worried about the fate of the crops and their food security.
Deputy Director (DD) of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) Krishibid Masudur Rahman said crops of around 13500 hectares of land have been submerged.
If the seedlings of recently transplanted T-Aman paddy remained under flood water for 8-10 days more, it would be damaged, he said.
In this situation, the affected farmers would have to farm early varieties of robi crops in next season to recoup the losses caused by flood, he added.
On Thursday, local lawmaker and general secretary of Bangladesh Krishak League Umme Kulsum Smriti visited the flood affected areas of Kishoregari union under Polashbari upazila by boat.
