Flash flood hits Moulvibazar

Heavy rain in the last two days and onrush of water from hills from across the border have triggered a flash flood in Kamalganj and Kuluara upazilas of the district affecting some six hundred villages in the two upazilas.
The worst affected villages are Bhanugahj, Kumrakapon, Ujirpur, Baligaon, Choitonnoganj, Naraonpur, Gupalnagor, Korimpur, Badhe Korimpur,Itkhola, Sreepur, Kunagaon, Gonganagor, Mokabill,Kurma Peranbazar in Kamalganj upazila and Nichintopur, Itarghat villages of Kulaura upazila.
The low-lying areas in Monu and Dholai river basins were submerged during the period, said an official of Water Development Board (WDB) in the district.
Locals said the flood-hit people have taken shelter on roads and shelter centres. The Dholai River Protection Embankment has development breaches at different points. Flood water entered Kamalganj municipality area through a portion of breached embankment.
Sources said, Boro paddy on 50 hectares of land and Aus on five hectares of land at the affected villages in Kamalganj upazila got damaged. Fishes worth about Tk 50 lakh were washed away from different ponds in the upazila.
Contacted, Zahidul Islam Miah, UNO of Kamalganj, who visited the affected areas yesterday, told The New Nation that the local administration would provide assistance to the victims. “We are overseeing the condition of landslide areas in the upazila and informed the matter to the higher authority,” he added.
Moulvibazar WDB executive engineer Aziz Md Chowdhury said the Monu and Dholai were flowing below the danger level on Sunday noon. He, however, said that the water level of the rivers was increasing due to onrush of water from the Sorifpur border.
Landslides in five riverbanks are taking place due to heavy rain in Dholai and Monu rivers, he added. If this rate of increase continues, the rivers might cross the danger level anytime, said the executive engineer Flood-hit Abdul Alim, 58, of Sreepur village in Kamalganj upazila, said the flood was triggered by heavy rain in the last two days. Water from Dholai started to enter our home since Saturday evening, he said.
Another victim Joynal Abdin, 65, of Nichintopur village under Kualura upazila in Monu river basin, said more than 110 houses of the area was flooded on Thursday night.
Meanwhile, three members of a family were killed as a large chunk of earth from a rain-soaked hill fell on a house in Borolekha upazila of the Moulvicazar district Saturday night..
Police recovered the bodies of Rajesh Bauri, 35, his wife Manju Sree Bauri, 30, and their one-year-old daughter, Sima Bauri, from Shahbajpur Tea Garden around 8:30am yesterday.
Rajesh and Manju, both tea garden workers, used to live inside the Shahbajpur garden.
