Fish production has fallen in the south-western districts of the country due to a number of reasons. The reasons include absence of proper planning dearth of capital, Dispute over ownership of water bodies and complexities in demarcation of khan lands.
The government plans and other water bodies under pica culture was not implemented. At least 68789 ponds and tanks under fisheries department in, Chuadanga, Meherpur, Magura, Jhenaida, Narail, Jessore, Sathkhira, Khulna, Kushtia and Bagarhat districts are yet to be brought under pica culture scheme.
Fish worth about tk 25 crore can be cultivated in these ponds and tanks under a source in the fisheries department said,
It is further learnt that the pond development act has been revised to boost the fish production as per the reyised act the deputy commissioners and the U.N.O well serve notices on the owners of the uncultivated silted ponds and tanks to bring the water, bodies under piscieultere programmed. If the owners fail to cultivate fish in their water bodies with in the specified time those will be declared acquired, and these water bodies will be handed over to any person or organization on 20 years teme to cultivate fish.
