A garments worker Najma Begum was seen yesterday trying to find out her valuable searching in the ashes after all of their belonging burn in fire incident.
She said they have no place to go. They were earning their bread working in the garment factories. Now it’s all over.
Not only Najma Begum but also more than 200 families are living under the open sky following a devastating fire at Comilla Patti in North Maniknagar area in the capital on Sunday.
The victims and local people said the fire broke out all in a sudden in Comilla Patti around 3:15pm. As soon as the fire engulfed the slum, all the residents came out of their house. And they also tried to douse the fire after informing the fire service.
The fire caused panic among the residents of the surrounding buildings. They quickly descended and took road for safety, they said.
Bangladesh Fire Service & Civil Defence’s control room duty officer rasel Shikder told the New Nation yesterday that their 9 units rushed to the spot after receiving the news of the fire. After one and half hours of frantic efforts the fire came under control.
He said the place was like a slum area. The fire had spread quickly as most of the houses were tin-shed. Though around 228 slum rooms burns, no casualty were reported.
Initially, the cause of the fire and the extent of damage were not known, he added.
The victims suspected that the fire started while some one was cooking in a wood stove in a house. However, they could not confirm which house was responsible for the incident.
The victims also alleged that they did not receive any help from the government like food, cloth or house making materials. They were staying under the open sky without any help.
