Farmers switching to cultivation of non-traditional crops in Sylhet

Cultivation of different non traditional crops in the Robi season increased as the farmers in four districts of Sylhet division were more interested in diversification of agriculture, officials informed. The farmers here are getting more interested in raising different non traditional crops.
Dr Mamun Ur Rashid, deputy director of DAE, Sylhet divisional office said. “We also now give more technical and consultation assistances while the other departments like BADC also supply high yielding variety seeds to the farmers”, he added. Farmers have brought around 12,300 hectares of land under turmeric, lentil, khesari, pea, lin seed, sugarcane, onion, ginger, chilli, cinnamon, gram, mung, arhar, french bean and ginger cultivation.
President of a farmers’ group at Mollargaon union of Dakshin Surma Upazila Abdus Sabur Sujan said now the farmers are getting involved with non traditional crops for better returns. “Alongside adopting mechanised irrigation system, we now prefer diversified crops’ farming”, he said and added, “We also arrange training programme for the farmers with the help of agriculture officials”.
Additional Director of DAE, Sylhet Division Krishna Chandra Hore said the region’s agriculture lands will be increased further in the coming years as the government has started implementing a programme to bring arable lands under farming of different crops.
