In Sirajganj district 3755 hectares of land have been brought under groundnut cultivation while the area was 4010 hectares last year said sources of the Department of Agriculture Extensions (DAE)
The New Nation correspondent visited different char areas of the district . Farmers expressed their satisfaction about the yield this year. I have cultivated groundnut on four bighas of land and it will be harvested it in a week and two. I am expecting a total of 75 mounds yield and the profit is likely to be around Tk 65 thousand, said Jamal Uddin (60), a farmers of Borosimul village in Soydabad Union of Sadar upazila.
Now wet groundnut is selling at Tk 1200 to 1400 mound and dry ground at Tk 2500 to 2700 in local markets, he said, Md,omor Ali Shake,Depity Director of the DAE,said , char areas along side the seven rivers of the district are suitable for groundnut cultivation that helps many farmers to gain solvency. We are trying to introduce highly yielding varieties of the groundnut among the farmers.
