Loan defaulter: Rafiur Rabbi’s nomination cancelled

The Election Commission on Sunday cancelled the nomination papers of two candidates, including Santras Nirmul Toki Manch a convener Rafiur Rabbi in the Narayanganj-5 by-polls.
The nomination paper of Rafiur Rabbi was cancelled on loan default charges while that of BNF candidate Abu Hamidur Reza Bhashani for inconsistency in the address of his supporting voter.
As a result, six candidates stood valid to contest the by-polls slated for June 26.
They are: Jatiya Party-nominated AKM Salim Osman, former MP and Nagorik Oikya leader SM Akram, district Krishak Sramik Janata League president Shafiqul Islam, Iqbal Siddiqui, city Awami League president Anwar Hossain and Advocate Sirajul Majid.
Although Krishak Sramik Janata League president Kader Siddiqui and opposition leader Rawshan Ershad’s political secretary Golam Masih collected nomination papers, but they did not submit those.
The parliamentary seat fell vacant following the death of Jatiya Party lawmaker Nasim Osman, Selim Osman’s brother, who died on April 30.
