A Dhaka court on Wednesday recorded confessional statements of Chhatra League Faridpur unit President Nisan Mahmood Shamim, in connection with a case filed over laundering Tk 2,000 crore.
Metropolitan Magistrate Devdas Chandra Adhikari, recorded Nisan’s statement after CID Assistant Commissioner of Police Uttam Kumar Saha, also investigation officer of the case, produced the accused before court with a plea to record his statement under section 164 of CrPC in the case.
Later, the court sent the accused to jail.
On August 21, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of police arrested Chhatra League Faridpur unit President Nisan Mahmood Shamim on charges of money laundering in Dhaka.
Nisan had been on the run for the past few days. With Nisan’s arrest, CID has now arrested nine leaders of Faridpur Awami League and its associate bodies in connection with a Tk2,000 crore money laundering case filed with Kafrul police station in Dhaka.
So far, two of the accused have given confessional statements before a Dhaka court, the sources added.
Earlier on June 26, CID lodged the case with Kafrul police station against Sazzad Hossain Barkat, recently sacked Faridpur municipal unit Awami League general secretary, and his brother, Imtiaz Hasan Rubel.
The siblings were later arrested and gave confessional statements before the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court on July 24, following interrogation in police custody for three days.
CID said the brothers were brought to Dhaka on July 18 and are now in Dhaka Central Jail. The other arrests were made based on their confessions.
Police said the arrested leaders used their clout with senior politicians of the district to carry out extortion, land grabbing and other criminal activities.
