An extensive Rabi crop cultivation program has been taken up in the district by the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) for the current Rabi season to meet the requirements of the district.
According to the sources of DAE, a total of 155118 hectares of land has been brought under Rabi crop cultivation program with the aim of producing 917025 metric tons of food grain, winter vegetables, oil seed, spices and pulses.
According to the source, Boro paddy of hybrid, Hyv and local variety will be cultivated on 35225 hectares with the target of producing 13913 MTs of paddy while maize will be cultivated on 54 hectares to produce 347 MTs.
Wheat will be cultivated on 26630 hectares of land to produce 73860 MTs of wheat. Potato and sweet potato will be cultivated on 212 and 231 hectares respectively for producing 4382 MTs of potato and 3800 MTs of sweet potato.
According to the source mustard will be cultivated on 9760 hectares to produce a total of 1000 MTs of edible oil.
Ground nut will be cultivated on 4196 hectares to produce 5587 MTs, sugarcane will be cultivated on 7344 hectares to produce 352512 MTs of sugarcane, the source said.
The source said various types of pulses including lentil on 14642 hectares, grain on 296 hectares, mug on 1172 hectares, kheshari on 11500 hectares, motor on 840 hectares and mashkalai on 2751 hectares will be cultivated to produce a total of 27700 MTs of protein substitute food.
A total of 4486 hectares of land has been brought under different kinds of vegetable cultivation to produce 87200 MTs of vegetable.
Onion has been cultivated on 27919 hectares to produce 172652 MTsand garlic on 3552 hectares for producing 21690 MTs of garlic.
However a sizable amount of onion is already in the market bringing a ease in the price. The onion of last season is still selling at a high price.
Spices including coriander seed and green chili will be cultivated on 6412 hectares and 1878 hectares to produce 7876 and 2217 MTs respectively, the source said. The source further said that motivational and other preliminary work for achieving the target is underway.
