Ex-OC Moazzem’s bail rejected

A Dhaka court rejected the bail petition of former Sonagazi OC Moazzem Hossain in a case filed on the charge of circulating video of slain Madrasa student Nusrat Jahan Rafi’s statement in Feni.
Dhaka’s Cyber Tribunal Judge Mohammad As-Sams Jaglul Hossain passed the order on Monday noon. The court fixed June 30 for hearing on charge framing in the case and directed the jail authorities to produce Moazzem before it on the day. Earlier, Faruk Ahmed, a lawyer for Moazzem sought bail for him.
Moazzem was brought to the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court area at 12.26 pm on Monday through a prison van. Later, he was taken to the cyber tribunal at the 5th floor of the building.
Earlier, Moazzem Hossain, former Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Feni’s Sonagazi Police Station, was arrested from the capital’s Shahbagh area in the case lodged under the Information and Computer Technology (ICT) Act over madrasa student Nusrat Jahan Rafi murder on Sunday. On a tipped off, he was apprehended near the High Court Court area at about 4 pm.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) Maruf Hossain Sarder said this while briefing media at DC office of Ramna Zone on Sunday afternoon. He was later, handed over to the custody of Sonagazi Police Station around 9:30am on Monday.
On May 27, the Dhaka Cyber Tribunal, issued an arrest warrant against Moazzem Hossain in the case. But he could not be traced after the issuance of warrant for his arrest.
Moazzem was the OC of Sonagazi Police Station when Nusrat made charges of sexual harassment against her madrasa principal Siraj-ud-Daula in March, and Moazzem recorded her statement on his mobile phone. The video was later released on social media amidst widespread photos over a deadly arson attack on Nusrat allegedly by the followers of Siraj, who had already landed in the jail on the sexual abuse charge, in April.
On April 15, Supreme Court lawyer Sayedul Haque Sumon filed the case against Moazzem under the Digital Security Act.
Nusrat, a student of Sonagazi Islamia Senior Fazil Madrasa in Feni’s Sonagazi upazila, was set ablaze on April 6 allegedly for refusing to withdraw case filed against madrasa principal Siraj-Ud-Doula on the charge of sexually harassing her on March 27. Nusrat died on April 10 at Dhaka Medical College Hospital’s burn unit.
