N Korea, Venezuela, Chad among 8 countries on new US travel ban

President Donald Trump issued a new travel ban Sunday that saw North Korea, Venezuela and Chad among a list of eight countries cited for poor security and lack of cooperation with US authorities.
Trump ordered the new restrictions to replace an expiring measure that had locked him into political and legal battles over what critics alleged was an effort to block Muslims from entry into the country since he took office in January.

U.S. air strikes kill 17 IS militants in Libya

Six U.S. air strikes on an Islamic State desert camp in Libya killed 17 militants and destroyed three vehicles, the U.S. military said on Sunday, the first American strikes in Libya since President Donald Trump took office in January.
U.S. Africa Command said in a statement that strikes on Friday targeted a camp 150 miles (240 km) southeast of Sirte, a city that was once the Islamic State stronghold in Libya. The camp was used to move fighters in and out of Libya, plot attacks and store weapons, the statement said.

Eleven killed in eastern China house fire

Eleven people died when a blaze engulfed two houses early Monday in an eastern China city prone to fatal fire disasters, the government said. The fire broke out shortly after midnight in the city of Taizhou in Zhejiang province, and left two other people hospitalised in serious condition, a local government statement said. Ten more people sustained minor injuries. The fire was soon brought under control and its cause was being investigated.

Indian fireworks factory blast kills nine

A blaze at an illegal fireworks factory in eastern India killed nine workers who were stocking up ahead of the Hindu festival of Diwali next month, police said Monday.
The fire broke out at the factory in Jharkhand state late Sunday after an explosion. “The unit was being run illegally and there was a huge stock of fireworks in preparation for Diwali,” district police superintendent Prabhat Kumar told AFP.
