BSS, Dhaka :
Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan on Wednesday laid the foundation-stone of the temporary office of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) at Banglamotor in the city.
Speaking on the occasion, the minister said BIWTC has huge lands all over the country, but those have been occupied illegally.
The government has recovered many of the occupied lands and efforts are still on to retrieve the rest, he added.
Referring to the pollution of rivers, the minister said the country would not survive, if the rivers die. “The rivers would have to be kept flowing by any means,” he added.
Presided over by BIWTC Chairman Mizanur Rahman, the function was also addressed by Shipping Ministry Additional Secretary Mahbub Hossain, Joint Secretary Sobhan Hossain and BIWTC Director (Admin) Ananda Chandra Biswas.
The function was told that the temporary BIWTC office is being constructed on the fallen land of Fairly House at Banglamotor in 180 days at a cost of Taka 5 crore. The BIWTC office at Motijheel would be demolished to build a 20-storey building. During this construction period, the BIWTC office would be shifted to Fairly House temporarily.
The shipping minister said the BIWTC is making profits and therefore its employees are getting incentive bonuses. He urged all concerned to increase revenue income further to get more incentives in future.
