Bangladesh’s economy has not been hit too hard amid unprecedented political violence in the last six months, Finance Minister Abdul Maal Abdul Muhith says.
The expansion of domestic and export markets was the key to this, he said at the awards-giving ceremony of the Economic Reporters’ Forum at Ruposhi Bangla Hotel on Friday evening.
The extent of damage to the economy from political violence may lead to a big change in the next budget, he said.
Foreign investment dried up greatly due to political unrest as the foreign entrepreneurs who came here for investment had been careful. There had not been domestic investment as expected, said Muhith.
The minister, however, was optimistic that new investments would come in soon.
State Minister for Finance MA Mannan and Chief Executive Officer of Robi Axiata Limited Supun Weerasinghe, ERF President Khaja Mainuddin and General Secretary Abdur Rahim Harmachhi, among others, spoke at the ceremony.
