Sylhet Bureau :
A strong syndicate of drug peddlers is allegedly back in business at around 50 spots in Sylhet.
The syndicate mainly runs business in connivance with some members of law enforcement and narcotics control department. It bribes a large sum of money that mainly comes from the mastermind and godfathers, including some political leaders, a source from police said.
The members of the syndicate store drugs in Railgate, Barokhola and Kodomtoly areas, from where they supply in different areas in Sylhet. The drug peddlers impersonating police officers operate their business.
Deputy Director of the Department of Narcotic Control (DNC) admitted that the practice takes place. ‘We have information that some members of law enforcers are involved in this trade; they are misusing their power,’ he said.
Middle and lower middle class families now commonly consume Yaba, which was largely used by high-class family children or private university students earlier, since the drug market expanded recently. The demand for buprenorphine (injection) is also increasing, especially in one parts of the city.
Yaba is mostly popular in posh areas like Upashor and Ambarkhana. The demand for cannabis and heroin is highest in Railgate and station road areas.
Drug users sit in queue there to feed their addiction until the market ends with the sunrise. Drug sales also start in Pular muk as darkness falls.
Visiting the area the correspondent found some teenagers selling small packets of cannabis. They said they get them for Tk5 per packet and they sell them for Tk30-100. Sources in the area said Salah control the drug syndicate of the area through three accomplices.
