346 influentials indentefied by NCD: Drug peddling, smuggling gangs active in Khulna region

A list consisting names of 346 bigwigs ( Influential Persons) who are reportedly implicated in drug peddling in Khulna region have sent to Khulna Narcotics Control Directorate (NCD). The list was made by the Head Office of the Narcotics Control department on the basis of report of different Intelligence wings which were first sent to NCD’s Dhaka office, thereafter it was sent to the office of the Premier and then the list was sent from PM office to Khulna NCD through the Home Ministry under reference number-174, Dated-March 15, 2018 of the Head office of the Director (Operations) of the Narcotics Control Directorate at Dhaka. In that list it is directed to take actions against the listed criminals who are reportedly involved in drug peddling and smuggling and assisting the drug traders, sources said.
According to the list, 272 influential persons, 34 policemen including two Officers-in-charge of two police stations of Khulna district and 40 others have been directly and indirectly conducting and patronizing the brisk business of drug and smuggling at eight police stations areas in Khulna city under Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP) and nine upazila areas of Khulna district under Khulna district police (SP Office).
Sources said, Drug peddling gangs are alarmingly active in Khulna city and at Nine upazila areas of Khulna district. Drug peddlers are more active than the previous periods. Drug-addicts can get drugs easily if they expand their hands. Yaba, ganja (Hemp) and Indian contraband Phensedyl are being sold without any obstacles. As a result, guardians are worried for their children. Drug-takers are implicating with different kind of crimes including snatching, stealing, robbery and killing without getting money for purchasing drugs.
Several killings occurred in Khulna centering the supremacy over drug peddling, according to the police. But it is a matter of great strange that drug peddling cannot be stopped by any means.
Sources said, drives against drug sellers are conducted now and then, but result is zero as some influentials and some dishonest members of police have been assisting the drug peddlers in exchange of hush money, it is alleged.
The Premier of the country Sheikh Hasina now and then expresses her deep concern regarding drug abuse and she also declares ‘Zero Tolerance’ against drugs.
Md Humayun Kabir, Police commissioner of Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP) told in a view-exchange meeting with journalists at his conference room on June 7, 2017 that he would show ‘Zero Tolerance’ in the matter of rooting out drugs from the city.
But unfotunately, the present situation is different. Selling and buying of drugs are now the common features of Khulna city and nine upazila areas of Khulna district.
Sources further said, the drug peddlers are so strong that they have been conducting their illegal business without any hesitation. On the other hand, young generation is destroying due to violent clutches of drugs.
It is alleged that different type of drugs are being sold at different places in the city. Near at Khulna Club, at Tootpara, Baniakhamar areas under Khulna Kotwali police station, Zoragate, Housing bazaar, Near T&T office, Goalkhali, Noyabati, Kashipur Padma gate, Khalishpur Industrial areas under Khalishpur police station, Sonadanga bus stand, New Market, Khanjahan Nagor, Sonadanga residential area under Sonadanga police station, Daulatpur Notun Rastar more, Railygate, Pabla Kundupara, Pabla Bonikpara, Pabla Dattobari, Chunnur Battala, Pabla Khan para, Pabla Bairagi para, Deana Jessore more,Deana Asader more and Deana Mukul Vandar and Daulatpur Anjuman road (Amtala intersection) area under Daulatpur police station, Arongghatabazar, Sholuabazar and Latabazar areas under Arongghata police station, Jabdipur, Badamtala, Shiromoni and Patherbazar areas under Khanjahan Ali police station under Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP) in Khulna city, drug traders have been selling drugs at random.
A constable of Narcotics control department named Md. Siddiqur Rahman was transferred recently on charge of leaking out information. Besides, some dishonest policemen and influential persons have been aiding the drug peddlers, sources added.
According to sources, more than at 500 spots at different places under eight police stations in Khulna city, different type of drugs including Yaba, Ganja(Hemp) and Phensedyl are being sold and purchased without any obstruction. Besides, at different places of nine upazila areas in the district, drug peddling is going on unabated. The nine upazilas of Khulna district are- Digholia, Phultala, Dumuria, Terokhada, Rupsha, Batiaghata, Koyra, Dakop and Paikgachha upazila.
On the other hand, the eight police stations under Khulna city are- Khulna Kotwali, Sonadanga, Horintana, Labonchara, Arongghata, Khanjahan Ali, Daulatpur and Khalishpur police stations.
Local people alleged that most of the policemen of all police stations do not arrest the drug traders, but the members of police arrest the innocent persons allegedly by putting ganja and yaba into the pockets of the innocent persons and later they are freed if they pay bribes, it is alleged. The common people sought for rescuing from the harassment by the police.
It is also alleged that policemen of all 17 police stations of Khulna city and District reportedly realize monthly tolls from the drug traders and as such the drug peddling cannot be possible to reduce.
Sonali Sen, Additional Police Commissioner (ADC) and also the Spokesperson of the Media Wing of Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP) said, Taking action has already started against the listed policemen, the culprits whatever may be their designations, stern action will be taken against them, she added.
Md. Nizamul Haque Molla, Superintendent of Police (SP) of Khulna District told the journalists that if the allegations brought against the listed policemen are proved, then proper action would be taken against them. He said adding that the investigation in this regard has already started.
Md. Rasheduzzaman, Deputy Director of Khulna District Narcotics Control Directorate said, We have manpower shortage, yet the drive against the drug peddlers have been continuing regularly according to the list.
