Drug peddlers rule Sylhet city

S. A. Shofiee, Sylhet :
Trading in illegal drugs is going on unabated but authorities of the Sylhet city corporations and law enforcing agencies appear apathetic to it.
Local people adjacent to parks or playgrounds in the Sylhet city alleged that the men of the SCC and lawmen keep close link with drug peddlers.
The drug peddlers are backed by local terrorists and politicians, and help them do the illegal trade safely in exchange for a handsome weekly or monthly allowance.
Just after the sunsets, the parks and playgrounds turn into ‘drug-dealing-hubs’. The drugs include Yaba tablet, ganja and phensidyl. Sylhet Railway station and surma market area several groups were selling and buying ganja with no fear of lawmen storming the ground, as if they rule the roost and with absolute immunity from law.
Scenes are no different after nightfall at Jalalabad Park, Pulermuk, Kodomtoly and other parks and playgrounds in the city.
One city dweller said law enforcing agencies in charge of busting all crime dens including those for illegal drugs often behave too leniently with the abusers and unauthorised sellers – apparently because they don’t want to “disrupt a regular source of income”.
As assets of SCC the duties approach them to save the parks or playgrounds from misuse, said an employee of the SCC. But all the officials have to surrender under muscle, he said.
Locals said that even though government changes, the criminals including drug paddlers always remain with the ruling party. This has been a deplorable reality in our society, one elderly citizen said.
With addicts living in footpath, some students of Collage and University are often seen assessing drug-vendors’ income, “for a give and take deal,” said a trader in the Surma market area.
This is one of many ways how the university students ruin their future and also dent that of the nation. Some of them eventually take fully to the illegal business for making quick bucks by ditching studies, people watching them, said.
