Arson attack: Driver of covered van killed in Kansat

A driver of a covered van was killed and his helper sustained burn injuries when miscreants hurled petrol bomb at the van in Shibganj upazila’s Kansat of Chapainawabganj district on Tuesday. Driver of a passenger bus received fatal injuries at Kalirbazar in Narayangonj sadar upazila at 7 pm on the day when criminals hurled petrol bomb at the vehicle. Two units of Fire Service extinguished the fire.
Besides, the miscreants torched at least 12 vehicles, including rice and potato carrying trucks, on the day. Five persons were injured in the incident, sources said.
Panic has gripped the people in view of attack on even food grains carrying trucks. It is being considered as new dimension in the ongoing hartal and blockade.
The deceased has been identified as Shipon, 30, son of Abdul Mannan from Bhola. Quoting the locals, Shibganj police OC MM Mainul Islam said that the miscreants hurled petrol bomb at the covered van of Nabiullah Cargo Service when it reached near the Kolabari area early Tuesday, leaving Shipon dead on the spot and his helper Shakil burnt.
Being informed, police went to the spot and recovered the body from the spot. Helper Shakil was taken to Shibganj heath complex and was later shifted to Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital for better treatment.
The body has been sent to Chapainawabganj sadar hospital morgue for autopsy, added the OC.
The miscreants torched another truck with petrol bomb at Chapainawabganj sadar around 11 am the same day. Front side of the truck had been damaged seriously.
In Barishal, miscreants torched a BRTC’s bus at mid-night on Monday night. It was parked at regional deport. Local unit of fire service and civil defence rushed to spot and doused the fire, but the bus was burnt by that time, BRTC’s deport in charge Md Zulfiker confirmed it.
In Joypurhat, two rice and potato trucks were torched at Purapoil on the Joypurhat- Hilli Road at 7 am on Tuesday. OC (Investigation) of Joypurhat Sadar Sirajul Islam said, a gang of miscreants on motorbikes torched the vehicles. Later police and fire worker doused the fire, he said.
In Bogra, a passenger carrying bus was torched at Baniya on the Joypurhat-Bogra highway around 10 am on Tuesday. Witnesses said, a gang of miscreants numbering six to seven torched the bus pouring petrol in the highway. Before it, they asked the passengers to get down.
Getting news, police and fire service worker rushed to the spot and extinguished the fire, Magistrate Abul Hashim confirmed it to journalists.
In Sylhet, a gang of miscreants torched with crude bomb a covered van of a food processing company, near Khan Monzil on the Mirazbazar- Jatorpur Road. Driver of the van Nazrul Islam said, the miscreants arrived with three motorbikes while he was unloading goods.
Ignoring request, the miscreants torched the van pouring petrol, he said.
The front side of the vehicle had been damaged totally.
In Noakhali, a passenger bus was torched by the miscreants near the Natun Bustand of the sadar upazila. About five persons, including helper of the bus, were injured. They were admitted to a local hospital. The bus was going to Chowmahoni from Maizdi.
Police picked up seven activists of BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatra Shibir, from different places of the capital on charge of plotting subversive activities in 24 hours yesterday.
