Narayanganj District Bar Association on Thursday called a daylong hartal in the district for Sunday protesting the killings of seven people, including senior lawyer Chandan Sarker, after their abduction. Bar Association president Shakhawat Hossain told UNB that they called the shutdown programme demanding immediate arrest of those involved in the killings and taking steps to improve the deteriorating law and order situation in the district.Apart from the hartal, the Bar Association announced a five-day programme, including demonstrations, beginning today (Thursday) to protest the killings.Earlier, on Sunday, Narayanganj panel mayor Nazrul Islam, his three associates and driver, were abducted by miscreants from Fatullah area of the city. Hours after their abduction, senior lawyer at district Judge’s Court Chandan Kumar Sarker and his driver were also abducted while they were going to capital Dhaka.Three days into their abduction, the bodies of six people, including that of Nazrul and Chandan Kumar, were recovered from the Shitalakhya and Dhaleshwari rivers on Wednesday morning.Besides, another body, believed to be of Jahangir, the car driver of Nazrul Islam, was recovered from the Shitalakhya River on Thursday morning.The recovery of the bodies sparked violent protests among the family members, relatives, and the locals.– UNB, Dhaka.
