Staff Reporter :
Local Government and Rural Development (LGRD) Minister Md Tajul Islam on Sunday said that Dhaka might be inundated, if there is excessive rainfall and too much water comes from the upper regions.
“But we have taken all kinds of preparation to face it,” Tajul said while speaking at the 3rd Inter-Ministerial Meeting to review the measures taken to reduce water logging in Dhaka and Chattogram and to prevent dengue and other mosquito-borne diseases.
He further said the water logging is likely to be lessened in Dhaka this year as the government has implemented various development projects.
The city dwellers’ sufferings are increased in rainy session due to traffic jam and water logging.
The minister said, “The lowlands are rapidly flooding. But, we have taken many initiatives to reduce water logging, although the measures are still insufficient.”
“Some canals have been freed from occupation and the rescue of drives are still going on. Most of the new wards in the city corporation are low-lying and there are infrastructural problems,” he said.
“Resolving the problems, a project has been taken with an allocation of more than Tk 4,000 crore. People will get benefit, if the project is implemented,” the minister added.
