The 9th death anniversary of first elected Mayor of Dhaka City Corporation Mohammad Hanif will be observed in befitting manner today.
On the occasion Awami League and different social, cultural and professional bodies are set to recall Mohammad Hanif offering wreaths on his grave and staging discussions and prayers.
A personal aide and disciple of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Hanif, who subsequently became the elected mayor of the capital and president of Awami League’s Dhaka city unit, breathed his last on this day in 2006.
His death came following prolonged ailments largely caused by wounds which he sustained during the August 21, 2004 grenade attack on an anti-terrorism party rally at Bangabandhu Avenue where 24 people were killed.
Different organisations including Mayor Mohammad Hanif Memorial Foundation and Bangabandhu Sanskritik Jote have drawn up programmes to observe the anniversary. They will place wreaths at his grave at Azimpur in the city in the morning and stage a discussion and Doa Mahfils at Dhaka City AL office at Bangabandhu Avenue in the afternoon on the occasion.
Dhaka South City Corporation will also organize a Doa Mahfil at Nagar Bhaban at 11 am for the salvation of the departed soul.
