Protest for not getting rice at Tk 10 per kg: Dealer opens fire on cardholders: 100 hurt

At least 100 people, including Kodalkati Union Parishad (UP) Chairman, were injured when the local dealer shot at the cardholders who were protesting for being deprived of getting fair price rice at Tk 10 per kg at Rajibpur upazila in Kurigram district on Thursday noon.
All the injured persons were immediately admitted to Rajibpur Government Health Complex. As the condition of Mahfuzul Haque, Biplob and Mandal deteriorated, they were sent to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital in critical conditions.
The injured, among others, were identified as Kudalkati UP Chairman Humayun Kabir Sakku, 50, Mahfuzul Haque, 40, son of Naib Ali of Charasazi Mandalpara village, Rukan, 45, son of Faruk, Taleb Ali, 46, son of Nasir, Raju, 20, son of Abu Bakar, Naib Ali, son Siddique, 50, son of Lokman, Surman, 35, son of Abdur Rashid of Sajai Sarkarpara village and Dulu, 37, son of Abdur Rashid.
Police sources said, the cardholders who were deprived to get rice in fair price at Tk 10 per kg along with the local UP chairman and members brought out a protest procession against corruption and irregularities of the dealer, Tota Pramanik.
Rajibpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Rabiul Islam said, “The dealer, Tota Pramanik, has been arrested in this connection. Police are patrolling in the area. A tense situation is now prevailing here.”
