Deal for Padma Bridge works

S Korean firm to supervise construction process

The government on Monday inked a Tk383 crore deal with a South Korean consortium for supervising the construction work of Padma Multipurpose Bridge (PMB) project.
Shafiqul Islam, Project Director (PD) of PMB, and Cho Nan Min, team leader of the Korean Expressway Group comprising seven companies signed the deal on behalf of their respective sides held at the Setu Bhaban in Mohakhali in the city.
The companies are Korea Expressway Corporation (KEC), South Korea (Lead Partner), Pyunghwa Engineering Consultants Ltd, Korea Engineering Consultants Corporation, SUNJIN Engineering and Architecture Company Ltd (SUNJIN), ACE Consultants Ltd (Bangladesh) and DevConsultants Ltd (DevCon), Bangladesh.
 “The deal will be effective for five years. With the appointment of the Korean Consortium as supervising consultant, the government completed all kinds of contract awards for the major tasks of the PMBP,” said Shafiqul Islam.  
Earlier, the Cabinet Purchase Committee at a meeting on October 13 approved the tender proposal of the KEC.
Shafiqul Islam also said that the consortium as a construction supervision consultant (CSC) would supervise the construction work of the main bridge and also the river training work of the project.
On September 10 this year, Cabinet Purchase Committee awarded the river training work contract of the mega project to Chinese company Sinohydro Corporation at a cost of Tk 8707.81 crore.
Earlier, the contract for main civil construction work has been awarded to another Chinese firm, China Major Bridge Engineering Construction Company, while separate contracts for approach roads at the two ends of the bridge and service area-2 were awarded to other companies.
The construction of approach roads is now in progress and already 30 per cent of the work has been completed, while the contract was signed for main bridge construction with China Major Bridge Engineering in June this year and 15 per cent advance payment was made to the contractor.
