A newborn baby girl woke up at the time of her final bathing before burial at the Azimpur Graveyard in the city on Monday.
She was taken to the graveyard after doctors at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) declared her dead and issued a death certificate.
The baby girl was immediately rushed to Azimpur Maternity Hospital and then to Dhaka Shishu Hospital at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar for better treatment. Now she is undergoing treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Shishu Hospital.
Sharmin Akter, 20, wife of Minhaz Uddin, hailing from Dhamrai, got admitted to the DMCH with labour pain on Sunday.
Later, she gave birth to a baby girl through normal delivery at 7:30am on Monday. The on duty doctors declared the newborn dead just some minutes after the delivery. The DMCH also issued a death certificate.
She was brought to Azimpur Graveyard and was being given her final bath before burial when she moved, Hafizul Islam, a caretaker at the graveyard, said. “It was then that we realised that the baby is alive.”
The newborn’s maternal uncle, Shariful Islam, told journalists that the baby was first rushed to Azimpur Maternity Hospital and then to Dhaka Shishu Hospital.
Doctors there say the child is in the ICU and that her condition has improved a little.
Professor Md Abdul Aziz, Director of the Shishu Hospital, at a press briefing at the hospital premises said that the staff of the hospital will put in their utmost efforts to try and save the baby.
DMCH Director Brigadier General AKM Nasir Uddin said the hospital has formed a four-member probe committee, headed its assistant director Bidyut Kanti Pal, to investigate the incident.
“We will investigate whether this child was actually delivered and declared dead at DMCH,” he said.
