A listed criminal was killed in a gunfight between his cohorts and police at Thukra in Dumuria upazila early Saturday.
The deceased was identified as Ferdaous Islam Litu alias Litu Sardar, 30, son of Rezaul Karim Sardar of Raghunathpur village in the upazila. Mohammad Azharul Islam, sub-inspector of Dumuria Police Station, said Litu was wanted in several cases, including for kidnap, murder, robbery and extortion.
He was a member of an outlawed party, said police.
Acting on secret information, a team of police arrested Litu from Thukra in the upazila around 7:45 pm.
Later police conducted a drive along with Litu to
recover firearms around 2:00 am in Thukra area.
Sensing the presence of police, associates of Litu opened fire on the law enforcers, forcing them to hit back with firing, triggering a gunfight.
Litu was caught in the line of fire and died on the spot while his cohorts managed to flee.
Two police constables were injured in the incident.
