Cricket fans took to the streets across the country on Tuesday to celebrate the victory of Bangladesh over England in the ICC Cricket World Cup that took the Tigers to the quarterfinals of the cricketing extravaganza.
People from all walks of life, including various political parties, socio-cultural organisations, students, brought out colourful processions at different parts of the country, including the capital, to mark the outstanding success of the Tigers.
Dhaka University students gathered at Madhur Canteen from different residential halls at noon from where they brought out a victory procession when they chanted various slogans.
The procession ended at Raju Sculpture after parading the campus.
Students of many other educational institutions also thronged the Dhaka University’s TSC to celebrate the Tigers’ victory together.
The cricket-loving people carried national flags and wore attires matching with the colours of the national flag and jersey of the National Cricket Team, splashing colours to each other and dancing with the musical instruments. The fans expressed the hope that Bangladesh will display a better performance in the ongoing World Cup.
Meanwhile, Dhaka city unit of Awami League brought out a victory procession in front of its office at Bangabandhu Avenue in the city. The procession paraded different thoroughfares of the capital.
The ward units of the city Awami League and its associate bodies also brought out several processions marking the victory of the Bangladesh Cricket Team.
BNP brought out a victory procession from the Jatiya Press Club that ended in front of Bangladesh Medical Association Bhaban at Topkhana after parading several streets.
Victory processions were also held in many places across the country, including Chittagong, Rajshahi, Khulna, Sylhet, Joypurhat and Bagerhat districts, Chittagong University, Khulna University and Rajshahi University.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday called upon all to bring out victory processions across the country on Tuesday to celebrate the win. Besides, the BNP-led 20-partry alliance on Monday relaxed its ongoing hartal for 12 hours from 6am to 6pm on Tuesday for the celebrations of the Bangladesh cricket team’s quarterfinal berth in the World Cup.
The Tigers reached the quarterfinals of the World Cup beating England by 15 runs in their 5th Pool-A match at Adelaide Oval in Australia on Monday.
