Cosy confidence of govt in police power for assured election victory becoming shaky

Quoting intelligence sources, a national daily yesterday reported that a faction of BNP-Jamaat has planned “target killing” to foil the assured plan for election victory. Already some militant outfits have become active to execute the plan.
The certain political quarter is maintaining round-the-clock liaison with the militants and using special apps to stay in touch with them. The news report further said influential ministers, bureaucrats, top ranking pro-Awami League leaders and intellectuals are in the “hit list”.
It said, there are several high ranking police officials are also in the killing list in a bid to destroy the confidence of police force. The militants are also preparing to conduct sabotage at key-point-installations including some power stations.
Meanwhile, the police in the last two months arrested more than 50 cadres of different militant organizations including Islami Chhatra Shibir. The arrested persons during interrogation confessed to the police about the plan of “target killing”. The news report said Shibir cadres and militants have planned to start their coordinated mission from this month (October).
Another report said, the militants are regrouping, particularly in Chattogram area, to create an abnormal situation ahead of the national election. Quoting law enforcement officials, the report mentioned that militants are collecting a huge quantity of arms, ammunition and explosives at their hideouts.
This time, the militants prefer the distant rural and hilly areas to collect and trained up new members- such as madrassa students and unemployed youths-for their organizations. In the recent years, the law enforcement agencies have identified several militants’ dens in greater Chattogram, including Hathazari, Banskhali, Sitakunda, Mirsarai areas.
Recently after capturing a Hizb-ut-Tahrir member, Chattogram Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md Mahabubur Rahman told journalists that some political quarters become very active to get some unfair facility ahead of general election, and for that reason they try to create an abnormal situation.
The militant issue or threat from militant outfits is nothing new in our country. Several persons, including a good number of foreigners, have so far been killed in the hands of militants. Before January 5, 2014 voter less national election, several people were killed in petrol bomb attacks and other terrorist activities. Police at that time followed the path of killing instead of discussion with the stakeholders resulting to gun down several hundred people.
We had cautioned the government not to follow the path of oppression or repression, rather to sit in discussion with the political opponents and take steps not to hold parliamentary election most unparliamentarily to deny free election.
The government under the dominance of bureaucrats will not understand that bureaucrats are too clever for the good of any people’s government. They are by and large power hungry with no concern for general public.
