Doctors from the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation or Pongu Hospital have said Rosina, the woman who lost a leg in a bus accident in Dhaka’s Banani, is in ‘critical condition’.
Hospital director and Rosina’s medical board chief Gani Molla, told bdnews24.com that “her condition is worsening.
“We have completed a second surgery. She is now in the recovery room. At this stage it is impossible to say what will happen.’
Rosina, who hails from Mymensingh, has been working as a domestic helper at the home of journalist Syed Ishtiaque Reza for ten years. The 21-year-old woman lost her leg after a BRTC double-decker bus hit her as she was crossing the street.
Her employer Reza told this news agency that her right leg was amputated from the thigh in her first surgery but a second surgery was necessary to remove the remainder of the leg due to an infection. “She is not in good condition. Her fever is not dissipating. She has septicaemia, which is a very dangerous sign.”Speaking to bdnews24.com at the hospital on Saturday, Rosina recalled the accident, which occurred near the Chairmanbari footbridge around 9pm on Friday night.
“Some people were crossing the street. When I got off the pavement to cross, a car came and I signalled it to stop. It stopped but when I started crossing the street, it rammed into me, and I fell on the street.”
Rosina said the driver of the BRTC double-decker did not stop even after the wheels were running over her leg.
She alleged that there were policemen nearby, but they did not step forward to help her.
“When I regained consciousness, I saw some men taking me to the hospital on an autorickshaw,” she said.
One of her legs was amputated in a surgery at Pongu Hospital around 1am on Saturday night.
“What will I do now? I won’t be able to get back to my previous life. I won’t get my leg back.”
