Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in a drive arrested Mohammad Moniruzzaman Chowdhury in Comilla on Monday on the charge of death of 12 people, who lived in his bamboo made house that caved in the Dhaka City’s Rampura jheel last month.
Arrested Moniruzzaman, 38, is the owner of the caved house. He is also a Juba League leader hailing from Comilla district.
RAB-3 Commanding Officer Lieutenant Colonel Golam Sarwar said this in a press briefing at the Tikatuli office in the capital in the afternoon.
A team of RAB-3 conducted a drive in Nishchintapur Tiprabazar area under Comilla Sadar upazila and arrested Moniruzzaman.
The Juba League leader built the house on the illegally occupied land, said the RAB official.
“But, Moniruzzaman claimed that he did not occupy the land illegally and claimed to have legal documents of the land, which had been submitted to Rampura Police Station,” the elite force official said.
When asked about the reason of submission, Moniruzzaman said, “The investigation officer asked for it from my family members, who compiled with.”
Police filed a case for the death of 12 persons a day after the tragedy, he said.
The RAB officer said, three murder cases, two arms cases and several extortion cases are pending against him.
At least twelve people, including four of a family, died when the two storied house made of corrugated iron sheets on bamboo poles in a water body in the capital’s Rampura caved in on April 15. Nearly 100 people of the low income group used to live in the poorly-built house.
