Two groups of Awami League locked into a clash at a programme marking Bangabandhu’s Homecoming Day in Faridganj of Chandpur on Friday, leaving 20 people including a journalist injured.
The clash ensued between the supporters of incumbent MP Shafiqur Rahman and former MP Dr Shamsul Haque Bhuiyan at about 11:30am in Bhandar Mahal area near the office of upazila chairman.
During the clash, a number of vehicles including of the former MP, and some shops were vandalised.
Of the injured, a journalist and four others were admitted to the upazila health complex.
On information, police rushed in and brought the situation under control.
Police and witnesses said, a discussion, organised by the upazila AL was underway near Bhandari Mahal market at about 11:30am where Shamsul Haque was addressing.
Both groups locked in a clash when a procession, led by Shafiqur Rahman was passing through the area.
Local AL leaders alleged that the portrait of Bangabandhu was also damaged during the clash.
