Arson Case: Charge-framing against Khaleda, 37 others deferred

A court of Dhaka on Monday deferred the hearing on charge framing against BNP Chief Begum Khaleda Zia and 37 others in the case filed over firebombing on a bus at Jatrabari in the capital to September 18.

Judge’s Court of Dhaka set the new date considering petitions of the defence seeking more time.
Of the accused in the case, 11 including Khaleda Zia, BNP Standing Committee member MK Anwar, Senior-Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, and former Joint Secretary General Aman Ullah Aman are on bail while 22 BNP leaders, including Joint Secretary General Habibunnabi Khan Sohel are fugitives in the case.
On January 23, last year, at least 30 people were burnt when a bus was emblazed at Jatrabari’s Katherpool area. Of them a seriously injured passenger of the bus succumbed to his injuries several days later.
In January, last year, the BNP Chief called a nonstop countrywide transport blockade that continued for about three months. Later, Jatrabari police, lodged two cases over the incident: one for murder charge while the other was filed under the Special Powers Act. Khaleda Zia was made the order giver of the attack.
Police submitted the charge sheets of the cases to the court in May last year against the 38 accused including Khaleda Zia.
